Well-behaved Women Seldom Make History

You may have seen that quote on greeting cards, posters, coffee mugs, bumper stickers or t-shirts.

Everyone from Eleanor Roosevelt, Marilyn Monroe, Gloria Steinem to Kim Kardashian have been incorrectly given credit for these words. The originator is Pulitzer Prize winning historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.

In a 1976 article about Puritan funeral services, Ulrich included the phrase "well-behaved women seldom make history”. People misinterpreted it to mean women should misbehave in order to be memorable. It got picked up and went viral.

After seeing her words misquoted and popping up all over the place, Ulrich saw it as a reflection on popular culture. She decided to turn it into a teaching moment and authored a book by that title. Her book examines the ways in which women have shaped history. It includes women who never intended to make history but often did in different ways.

The next time you see the quote "well-behaved women seldom make history" you may not remember Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's name, but I hope you at least remember who didn’t write them.

One of my great-great-great relatives was involved in the suffragette movement. She participated in the famous Black Friday; a suffragette demonstration in London, England on 'November 18, 1910'. The stormed the Houses of Parliament, trying 'to' secure the right for women 'to' vote. I have postcards she wrote 'to' other family members during her travels at that time.

I've seen the quote but never knew who said it. I would have guessed Bonnie Parker.

Apparently it is one that is often misunderstood. It caught my attention and felt it was further checking into. Enjoy your evening!

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your perspective. Apparently, the author was bemused and annoyed at how misunderstood her words were.

I have seen the phrase tossed around and didn't know the origin so felt it was worth checking into. The view on women and the impact they are making in history certainly is changing and should be acknowledged. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday

Thanks for highlighting that, I will know it's a lie if Trump ever claims the phrase.

Hmmmm....can't imagine him ever saying it. If he did, he's likely to get it wrong, just like so many other things he says.

I have seen another 🇨🇦 blogger use that phrase... of course incorrectly 🤦‍♀️ no big surprise there 🤣 Thanks for setting us straight! Another great post, can't wait for the next one 🙋‍♀️
That's why I take the time to investigate the origins and writers before posting quotes, phrases and information. Better to get it right the first time

Now that is a very interesting piece of history sexyldy1000! It's interesting that it took another 18 years before women in England were given what should have been rightfully theirs all along.

I have press clippings from that time period also. Those women worked hard for as you say what should have been theirs all along.

Another option is write it on your hand or in notes on your phone. Perhaps a tattoo then you would never forget it
