Each year, my ask, "Mom, what do you want for Christmas?"

It's not trinkets or toasters or other assorted 'things'. I usually say, 'Nothing'. But
here's what I really want:

I want them to keep coming around.
I want them to ask m.e questions.
I want them to ask m.e for my advice.
I want them to tell m.e their problems no matter how big or small.
I want them to tell m.e about their worries, their dreams and their hopes.
I want them to share laughter with m.e. To laugh with m.e or laugh at m.e.
I want them to be kind to one another and to those around them.
I want them to spend their funds making a better life for themselves.
I want to see them happy and healthy.

They have been giving to m.e throughout the year. What more could I possibly want except for it to continue?

Imagine, it was forty years ago today, John Lennon was assassinated outside the Dakota, his New York apartment building.

On that December Monday evening in 1980, long before the internet or cell phones, the world first learned of this tragedy from Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football.

Imagine..John has been gone for the same number of years as he lived. This year he would have turned eighty.

Here are some of John's quotes:
"Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans."
"All we are saying is give peace a chance..."
"Reality leaves a lot to the imagination."
"God is a concept by which we measure our pain."
"There's nothing you can know that isn't known."
"The more I see the less I know for sure."
"You either get tired fighting for peace, or you die."

Whenever I hear Imagine , it brings tears to my eyes. I am reminded of that night and think of how much has changed and how much remains the same.

Imagine
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No Hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people livin' for today
Ah, ah, ah-ah

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothin' to or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people livin' life in peace
Yoo, hoo, oo-oo

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharin' all the world
Yoo, hoo, oo-oo

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one

While I can still…
See and hear,
Walk and talk,
Smell and taste,
Feel and touch,
Laugh and smile.
I will keep on going.

While I can still…
Dream and hope,
Forgive and let go,
Believe and trust,
Love and care,
I will keep on going.

While I can still...
Give thanks and appreciate,
Find peace and joy,
Keep the faith,
I will keep on going.

While I can still…
Breathe the ‘g.i.f.t.’ of life,
I will keep on going,
Till my journey ends.

Today Is World Aids Day

In the 1980s, an epidemic began. Those who contracted the disease suffered from a compromised immune system, leaving them susceptible t.o cancer, pneumonia, and more life-threatening conditions. The disease, known as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Despite not having a cure for HIV, there are plenty of treatments that keep symptoms in check and can help sufferers. However, there are still a lot of misconceptions about HIV sufferers.

December 1st is World AIDS Day, and it's used t.o help dispel misinformation about HIV and AIDS. Below are several HIV-related myths and their corresponding contradictory facts:

MYTH: To stop the spread of HIV, people simply need to give up promiscuous sex and drug use.
TRUTH: Sex and drug use are not the only ways that HIV can be contracted. There are five fluids that carry the virus: blood, semen, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids and breast milk. That is why sharing needles during intravenous drug use and having unprotected sex can spread HIV. To protect yourself, avoid these fluids when interacting with strangers.

MYTH: HIV is the same as AIDS.
TRUTH: Though HIV causes AIDS, an HIV-positive individual does not necessarily have AIDS. Having AIDS implies that the sufferer’s immune system is compromised.

MYTH: HIV is a death sentence.
TRUTH: There are now many treatments available to help individuals living with HIV.

MYTH: I could get HIV through casual contact from an HIV-positive roommate, friend, relative or colleague.
TRUTH: There are five fluids that carry the virus: blood, semen, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids and breast milk. Unless you share these fluids with your HIV-positive acquaintance, you cannot contract the virus from them. HIV is not transmitted through kissing, touching, coughing/sneezing or by sharing food, drinks, dishes, utensils, towels, linens or clothes. HIV cannot be transmitted by sharing a pool, bathtub or toilet seat.

MYTH: If both partners are HIV-positive, they don’t need to use a condom.
TRUTH: Different strains of HIV exist. Sharing them could cause complications in treatment. It is thus safer to practice safe sex, both to prevent contracting different strains of HIV or STIs (sexually transmitted infections).

Today Is The Busiest Day For U.S. Plumbers

Here's something I hadn't heard before. Perhaps our U.S. members will relate

Many people know the Friday after U.S. Thanksgiving is known as ‘Black Friday’ in retail circles. But did you know it is referred as 'Brown Friday' for plumbers? It is also the busiest day of the year for them. Incoming calls, mostly for kitchen plumbing jobs, will jump 50% over an average Friday according one of the largest full-service commercial plumbing and drain cleaning services.

Plates littered with leftovers find their way to the kitchen sink and often end up being dumped down the garbage disposal. Some of the worst things to put down the drain are pasta, casseroles, turkey or chicken bones, stringy-fibrous vegetables (asparagus, artichokes, carrot skins, celery, potato skins and corn husks) and eggshells.

Additional strain is also put on plumbing systems while people host extra guests which leads to more showers, baths, flushes and perhaps extra loads of laundry.

She stared a.t this powerful, dangerous stranger, whom she had never seen nor met before.

He slowly and concisely listed ‘the’ conditions.

1.She had ‘seventy.two’ hours t.o provide a name.

2. If she said no, the offer would disappear. Forever.

3. And if she said yes, there was no going bac.k. No changing her mind.

It was strictly a once-in-a-lifetime offer. A deal that would change her life. A deal that would certainly change someone else’s. And one that she could not reveal t.o anyone else.

After tonight, regardless of her answer, she would never see him again.

She had no idea how she was going to respond, but realized, it was a deal being offered by evil incarnate

Money-Saving Tricks Using Everyday Items

Everyone enjoys saving money, especially when it comes to improving your home. Check out these handy hints using everyday items.

Use a Ceramic Mug as a Sharpening Stone

If you find yourself in need of sharpening a utility knife, pocket blade or scissors and don’t have access to a sharpening stone, you can simply flip over a ceramic coffee mug and use the outer edge of the bottom, the non-glazed part, as an emergency sharpening stone. This isn’t a perfect solution for continually sharpening your blades, but will do in a pinch.

Bring Dead Markers Back to Life

To bring your permanent marker back to life, simply remove the back from the maker. This will be different for each brand of permanent marker; for Sharpies simply remove the back nib. Next, deposit a few drops of isopropyl rubbing alcohol onto the felt material inside. Shake the marker a bit to ensure the rubbing alcohol is absorbed. It’s the solvent that the ink is mixed with that dries out first, making the pigment unable to flow.

DIY Emergency Candle

Cut a stick of butter in half, each half should burn for about four hours. (You may have to relight it a couple of times.) Next, cut a toilet paper square into four squares. Now fold one square diagonally and twist. Make a hole in the stick of butter to the base with a toothpick and place wick inside. Rub the top of the wick in the butter for starter fuel. Now light. You can also wrap the toilet paper wick around a toothpick so it does not fold over as the emergency candle burns.

The Miracle of a Walnut!

Furniture gets beat up over time, but you don’t have to live with the unsightly scratches. Simply rub a walnut over a scratch in wood several times. Then, with your fingers rub the scratched area. This will help the wood absorb the oil from the nut. Lastly, use a soft cloth to buff the area. Now the scratch is sealed and gone.

Pool Noodle Wrist Rest

Keep your wrists from getting fatigued during a long day at the computer by making this pool noodle wrist rest. First mark where you want to cut the noodle. Make the height slightly less than half of the full noodle diameter. (You could cut the noodle exactly in half and make two equally sized wrist rests.) Use a utility knife to slice the pool noodle lengthwise at the marks; then pull the pieces apart. Clean up any areas along the cuts and then place one of the pieces flat-side-down in front of your keyboard.

Homemade Heating Pad

Next time you have a sore neck or back, don’t head to the store for an electric heating pad. Instead, fill a sock with uncooked rice, tie the end and microwave it for two or three minutes. It will conform to whatever body part needs heat. You can even put in some fragrant herbs like cinnamon or lavender to make it smell nice.

Do Empaths Exist
Posted:Nov 20, 2020 12:00 pm
Last Updated:Sep 23, 2021 2:00 pm
43703 Views
The phrase 'being an empath' is a relatively new term to m.e. . Someone I know referred to themselves as one and it wasn't clear to m.e what they meant.

As someone who always wants to learn more, I decided to look into it. Here are some things I found out:

What is an empath?
Being an empath and being empathetic are two different things. “Being empathetic is when your heart goes out to someone else; being an empath means you can actually feel another person’s happiness or sadness in your own body,” according to Judith Orloff, MD, a psychiatrist and author of 'The Empath’s Survival Guide'.

Another way to describe it is that an empath is like an “emotional sponge”—they absorb both the joys and the pains of the world around them. An empath does not simply understand someone else’s pain, they sense and feel the emotions and feelings of their loved ones as part of their own experience.

The empathy scale
Empathy exists on a scale, ranging from narcissists and sociopaths, who are unable and uninterested in how others feel, to “super empaths,” who feel others’ emotions so much that they may be unable to differentiate between their own feelings and someone else’s, says Helena Rempala, a clinical psychologist at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Empaths are a type of ‘highly sensitive person,’ a term used to describe those who are highly attuned to outside physical, social, and emotional stimuli. It’s not just a mental response—others’ emotions trigger a cascade of reactions in the empath’s nervous system, leading them to become highly activated by it.

Not everyone agrees that empaths exist as a separate category and the label is more pop-culture than clinical. It's somewhat self-imposed and does not have the support of data that would illustrate the empath as a distinct personality type or even a set of personality traits.

The word means different things to different people; some believe ’empath’ is just a new name for ‘codependent,’ while others see it as a metaphysical or spiritual or even a special ability.

Are empaths born or made?
Like most psychological traits it’s hard to separate the influence of genetics versus environment but empaths are likely born with some predilection for increased empathy and then they learn to cultivate it as they grow. Research shows that empathy is a learned behaviour, with observable empathic development as early as the years.

How common are empaths?
It seems like everyone knows at least one person who is deeply empathetic, a good listener, and manages to get others to talk about their feelings, but full empaths are likely rarer.

About one to two percent of the population are true empaths, according to a study published in 'Nature Neuroscience'. While previous research has relied on self-report, this first-of-its-kind study aimed to objectively measure empathic abilities through studying mirror-touch synesthesia, a phenomenon where someone feels as if they are being touched when they see someone else being touched. Researchers conducted surveys of self-reported empathy and then correlated that with brain scans to confirm whether or not the person experienced this type of physical empathy. The numbers may be higher, as 10 to 15 percent of people meet the criteria for “highly sensitive,” and may experience being an emotional empath without the physical component, Rempala says.

Is being an empath a good or a bad thing?
It can be both. There’s a risk of becoming overwhelmed by taking on others’ emotions, especially if you can feel their pain but you don’t have enough information or tools to fix it. Helping others taken to the extreme may also cause you to neglect your own life and responsibilities.

Being highly sensitive can come with significant consequences, including anxiety, depression, and even a decline in physical health.

Breaking Her Own Rules

When considering joining an online, dating site, she did a lot of thinking about her own boundaries. What was she not willing to compromise on?

She considered herself a rational and intelligent woman and after much contemplation, she determined there was no way, she would consider someone the same age or younger than her own . To her, that would just be too weird and reek of being desperate. She knew she wasn’t one of those mature women who needed to validate their sex appeal by being with someone much younger.

She pre-booked a room in the luxury hotel so that once the tech. conference meetings and sessions were finished, she could relax and enjoy an evening out. Her friends that were at the conference, had all scurried off to fulfill their own plans and barely thought twice about leaving her on her own. It didn’t bother her as she couldn’t wait to kick off her heels and enjoy a long, hot shower.

With her hair wrapped in a towel, she donned the hotel-issued soft, fluffy bathrobe and poured herself a glass of chilled, white wine. She sat on the over-sized couch and glanced around the beautiful room as her mind started to wander. She kept thinking of his words, ‘If you ever change your mind, just let me know.’ Could she? Did she have the nerve to contact him?

Finally, she decided she had nothing to lose. ‘He’s probably out anyway so what are the chances he’ll actually respond,’ she convinced herself.

‘Guess where I am?’ she typed into her iPhone and hesitated briefly before pressing Send.

She was shocked when she quickly heard the ding of an incoming message.

‘Hey, beautiful. It’s great to hear from you. What’s happening?’ his words lit up the screen.

‘The conference is finished and I am in my room at the Westin Hotel,’ she responded.

‘What else are you up to?’ he inquired.

‘I am just relaxing after having a long, hot shower,’ she replied.

‘Hmmm… so now you are naked and wanting some company?’ he teased.

Her heart started pounding as she debated how to respond. There was no doubt, that once she crossed the line, there would be no turning back.

‘Only if you would like to drop by,’ she entered and held her breath.

‘I can be there in 30 minutes. Will that be soon enough?’ he responded.

‘Yes, that would be perfect. I am in room #710. It’s at the end of the hall. Just come right up when you get here,’ she instructed.

Oh my gosh! What the heck had she just done? A single, tall, good looking, guy who was twenty-five years younger than her, was on his way over!

She didn’t have much time to get ready. Black mascara, ruby-red lipstick and her favourite perfume sprayed between her cleavage and on her wrists were all she needed before deciding what to wear. She knew she had to pick out just the right outfit to wow him when he arrived.

She slithered into her favourite full-length, black, fishnet bodysuit that hugged her curves and accentuated her breasts. Black stilettoes completed her ensemble. She took a long, slow sip of wine, checked herself in the mirror, and decided she was ready.

The knock on the door quickly reminded her, there was no turning back.

She took a deep breath, walked confidently to the door and as she slowly opened it, she stepped back so that he would get a full, head-to-toe look at her.

He strode in and devoured her with his eyes and placed a bottle of wine on the table next to her. He turned around and paused, and as leaned towards her, she felt his warm breath on her cheek, as he pulled her into his arms and kissed her.

She was pressed against his hard and lean body, as the scent of his musky cologne filled her nostrils. She couldn’t think. All she could was feel… feel the strength of him, the warmth of his mouth on hers, the sensual touch of his fingers across the small of her back and her hands pressed against the softness of his sweater.

An ache, starting deep in her soul, spread outward and throbbed for release as the pressure of his lips increased.

Her lips parted willingly and his tongue slipped into the recesses of her mouth, causing a shudder to pass through her. Her knees were weak and almost buckled beneath her.

Without letting go nor removing his lips from hers, he walked her backwards, until she felt the side of the bed brushing against the backs of her legs.

They lay down in unison, locked together in a passionate embrace.

She completely surrendered herself to him. Time was suspended. Age was immaterial. All that mattered was that two consenting adults gave themselves to each other unconditionally.

Exhausted, satiated and spent - she fell asleep.

When she awakened, she reached out and realized she was alone. While the smell of sex permeated the air, she noticed the handwritten note propped up on the pillow beside her, ‘I can’t wait to do this again. Let me know when you are available’.

She contentedly, snuggled deeper into the covers, knowing she would never initiate another instance.

Everyday Things Designed During WWI

There are many everyday items that we take for granted and likely have no idea of their origin. For example, gas mask filters were used as disposable handkerchiefs after the war. Often, Items created for the war had to be repurposed following the war. Here are some others:

Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery emerged as a way to treat soldiers with facial injuries. The modern idea of plastic surgery and the techniques used today originated in WWI due to the injuries from the use of explosives such as artillery, machine guns, and chemicals.Dr. Harry Gillies developed the techniques to rebuild faces after so many noses were lost, and performed over 11,000 plastic surgeries on the wounded during the war.

Kotex
One hundred years ago, it wasn’t considered proper to talk about your period. During the war, army nurses did not have sanitary products provided to them. They found that the Cellucotton bandages made of wood pulp to treat wounds were five times more absorbent than other bandages, and used them as a makeshift sanitary napkin. After the war was over, Kimberly-Clarke executives were looking for ways to use the leftover Cellucotton, and marketed them as sanitary napkins.

Prosthetics
Prosthetics were created during WWI to assist soldiers with devastating injuries. The Germans were leaders in prosthetics, which did exist before the war but were advanced during and after the war because of the substantial number of limbs that were lost. The increase in casualties resulted in developing more functional limbs, specifically for arms, so that soldiers could be more accepted and welcomed back into society.

Wristwatches
Timepieces known as wristlets were sold during the 19th century. However, they failed to take off with men until World War I demonstrated their superiority to pocket watches in battle—particularly for military leaders who were coordinating precision attacks.

Blood Banks
Blood transfusions date back to the 1600s, but doctors rarely performed them before World War I, when they were accomplished by transfusing blood directly from one person to another. Capt. Oswald Robert, a U.S. Army Reserve doctor consulting with the British army, recognized the need to stockpile blood before casualties occurred. In 1917, he helped establish the first blood bank on the western front.

Modern Passports
In hopes of restoring tourism throughout Europe, the League of Nations issued guidelines for uniform passports in 1920. The standard documents were to include a cover embossed with the issuing country’s name and coat of arms—the same basic look they have today in almost every country, including Canada.

Contraception
The popularization of reliable contraception was for health purposes. Venereal disease [such as gonorrhea and syphilis] disabled many soldiers, and manpower was lost, creating a strong incentive to manage a contraception effort. Antibiotics had not yet been discovered to treat such infections, so “prophylactic stations” were set up to distribute condoms. One of the prophylactics that were available in France were called ‘French Letters.’ [For discretion] soldiers could go into a pharmacy and ask for a French Letter that came in a little envelope.”
